Chapter Ten

“I can’t believe Conall had the nerve to set me up with a sheep farmer!” Lori grumbled as she prowled around the design room at McDermott Mills, picking up fabric swatches and photographs and peeking at the design Fiona was working on. Fiona was in a meeting with Seamus and several of the company directors, so Rachel and Lori were alone.

“Oh, come on,” Rachel said with a smile. “I think you like him. And he could hardly keep his eyes off you yesterday. He’s very handsome. Besides which, he practically runs the operation by himself, so he obviously has some business savvy.”

Lori gave a noncommittal shrug. “I guess so.”

“Where is he taking you?”

“I’m not sure. A waterfall, I think, and then a bite to eat somewhere.” She paused. “What about you?”

Rachel had made plans to have dinner that night with Conall, since Lori would be out with Flynn. They’d agreed he would pick her up at the B&B at six o’clock.

“I’m not sure where we’re going for dinner,” she said. “The pub, probably, or maybe the hotel restaurant. I don’t mind where we go, to be honest.”

Lori gave her a sly smile. “So I probably shouldn’t suggest to Flynn that we meet up with you and have dinner together?”

“If I knew where we were going, I would tell you,” Rachel assured her. “Is Flynn picking you up here?”

“No. I’ll walk back to the hotel and meet him there.”

Rachel put down the colorful array of yarns she was sorting through. “Why are you here, anyway? You could be enjoying a leisurely breakfast at the hotel or taking a walk along the river. Why come visit me? Not that I mind, of course.” She smiled at her cousin. “I like seeing you.”

“I was bored,” Lori said. “Besides, I didn’t get a chance to see the mill when I brought you lunch the other day.”

That was true. Eager to get outside and enjoy the weather, Rachel had met her cousin in the parking lot of the mill and they had walked to the river and eaten their lunch on a nearby bench.

“Was there something particular you wanted to see?”

Lori shrugged, picked up a sheaf of papers near Fiona’s workstation, and studied them absently before setting them down again. “I’ve never been to a tweed factory and I wanted to see how it compares to Lakeside Industries.”

“And? What’s the consensus?”

“Well, it’s not even in the same league. I peeked into the weaving room as I came up and, honestly, the power looms are ancient.”

“They do the job,” Rachel assured her. “So, maybe McDermott Mills isn’t as big or technologically advanced as your father’s company, but I think they do just fine.”

“Define just fine. How much revenue do they bring in each year?”

Rachel shrugged. “I have no idea. I know they sell custom fabrics to some of the big fashion houses, and they also have their own line of men’s and women’s clothing, both casual and bespoke. If you’re interested in seeing the quality of the clothing, you should visit the retail shop in town.
